What to do if your dog eats chicken bones

Everyone knows that dogs are voracious eaters. Dogs, as everyone knows are not picky eaters. Dogs even eat non-edible things. Owners may provide the dog expensive high quality food but the dog will not pass up the chance to eat poop. Dog experts and vets would always tell us that dogs should never be allowed to eat chicken bones. This means that if your date in watching Avatar is a bucket of KFC, you need to lock the pooch in another room.

No matter how careful you are, you may not always be able to stop the dog from eating chicken bones. What will you do to help a pet that has deftly opened the trash can and gorged on chicken bones? Of course you cannot ask the dog to throw up the bones it has ingested. You simply need to monitor the “things” that goes out of the dog’s rear end.

Dogs have this unaccountable liking for bones. Bones are in fact buried and considered as treasures by the dog. What potential dangers do chicken bones have for the dog? Chicken bones, especially cooked ones are brittle. When gnawed and ingested by the dog, the bones can easily break and sharp splinters can puncture the stomach and the intestines. The sharp shards can get stuck on the mouth or pierce the throat of the dog too. Chicken drumsticks are more potentially dangerous. The long and hard drumstick bones would break into many needle sharp splinters that would be more dangerous if swallowed by the dog.

Observe the behavior of a dog that has eaten chicken bones. A change in behavior will be noticed if the bones have punctured the mouth, the throat or the innards of the dog. Take note of the dog’s stool. If it is tinged with blood or if the dog is straining to defecate, don’t procrastinate; take the dog to the vet’s.

Chicken bones are normally passed with the feces. A double ration will not only “cushion” the bones but the additional food intake will encourage the dog’s system to pass more stools. Pumpkins are touted to be effective remedies that will make the dog throw up. And cross your fingers that the bones will be puked by the dog.

Eating chicken bones can be dangerous to your dog’s health, but this is not the only food hazardous to dogs. Learn more at foods toxic to dogs, health and behavioiur related questions at Sarah’s Dogs.
